The Imuhira Parish: caring for our common home

An Imuhira Parish is a parish community that commits itself, in the light of Laudato Si', to caring for creation and for the most fragile. This page walks the parish through it, from the intention to concrete action.

Why an Imuhira Parish?Five good reasons▾
  • To live out the call of Laudato Si' in practice: « everything is connected », care for creation and for the poorest;
  • To make the parish a place of joyful ecological conversion, for every age;
  • To connect faith with daily habits: clean places, simplicity, gratitude, sharing;
  • To bring families, young people, movements and choirs together around shared action;
  • To join a network of parishes that share experience and celebrations.

Getting started

Eight simple steps

  1. Put the intention to the parish priest and obtain his agreement and blessing.
  2. Open the call to all parishioners, of every age.
  3. Hold a launch meeting: meaning, expectations, first volunteers.
  4. Form a small animating team (« Laudato Si' team »).
  5. Adopt a simple charter inspired by integral ecology.
  6. Draw up a parish action plan: prayer, formation and concrete acts.
  7. Register the parish on the platform to reach the resources and the network.
  8. Launch a first visible action (a clean-up, planting, a time of prayer for creation).

In the light of Laudato Si'Three pillars of the approach▾

Pray

Give thanks for creation, pray for our « common home » and for the most fragile, and carry that concern into liturgical life.

Learn

Discover integral ecology: « everything is connected », the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor, ecological conversion.

Act

Take concrete, lasting steps: clean places of worship and neighbourhoods, planting, simplicity, care for springs.

Everything is connectedIn Laudato Si'(2015), Pope Francis recalls that care for the environment, justice towards the poorest and the inner life form a single whole. The Imuhira Parish puts that insight into practice at the heart of the community.

Self-assessment

Three questions on composting, plastic and used batteries.

Self-assessment

Three questions to check what you have learned. The answer and its explanation unfold under each question.

Question 1 / 3Which of these can be composted?

  • A plastic bottle
  • Banana peel
  • A used battery
See the answer
Banana peel— Peel is organic waste: it composts and feeds the soil.

Question 2 / 3What is the first step to cut plastic waste?

  • Burning it in the open
  • Reducing at source: avoiding needless packaging
  • Burying it in the garden
See the answer
Reducing at source: avoiding needless packaging— Reducing at source is always the first reflex; burning gives off harmful fumes, burying moves the problem elsewhere.

Question 3 / 3What should be done with a used battery?

  • Throw it out with ordinary rubbish
  • Put it in the compost
  • Treat it as hazardous waste, separately
See the answer
Treat it as hazardous waste, separately— Batteries contain hazardous substances: they are collected separately, never in compost and never in a fire.

Commitment

Committing our parish

A parish community can join the Imuhira Parish network. The form is filled in afterhaving put the intention to the parish priest and obtained his agreement: that is the first of the eight steps. It asks for the name of the parish, the diocese or deanery, the location, the spiritual guide, the person who coordinates, and the pillars — pray, learn, act — the parish wishes to begin with.

The form requires an account. Create one, it is free, or sign in before opening it.
