The Imuhira School: learning the environment by practising it
An Imuhira School is a school that writes environmental care into its ordinary life — the yard, the classrooms, the club, the families — and not only into a lesson.
What it means
Four simple commitments
A well-kept yard
Separate bins, a compost corner, no burning in the open, and a rota that keeps it all going without resting on one person.
An active club
A group of pupils guided by a teacher, meeting regularly, with actions the pupils decide themselves.
The modules through the year
The ten training modules serve as material for teachers: in class, in the club, or as work at home.
One action each term
A collection, a planting, a green day, protecting a spring: one visible action, prepared with the sheets and followed with simple indicators.
Getting started
Six steps
Step 1
Obtain the head teacher's agreement
Put the intention to the head teacher and agree what is feasible this year.
Step 2
Find a teacher to guide the club
A volunteer, not someone appointed: that is what keeps a club going over time.
Step 3
Gather the interested pupils
An open call to every class, girls and boys, with responsibilities shared evenly.
Step 4
Survey the situation
A survey of the yard, the latrines, the water point and the waste, using the grid from module 5.
Step 5
Choose three actions
Useful, realistic with the means available, measurable — the three criteria from module 10.
Step 6
Sign the Charter and let us know
The school signs the Imuhira Charter and registers its club on the platform.
Roles
Who does what in the school
The head teacher
Authorises, frees up time, provides a space and supports the effort publicly.
The guiding teacher
Runs the club, is the link with the modules and with the platform.
The club committee
Pupils responsible for the activities, the equipment and the reporting.
The other teachers
Pick the ideas up in their own lessons where they fit.
Parents
Carry home what the children learn, and support the actions.
The management committee
Writes the school's needs — water, latrines, bins — into its priorities.
This organisation adapts to how each school actually works.
