Preamble
Why this Charter
The soil that feeds us, the water we drink and the air we breathe belong to no one and to everyone. Whatever damages them damages first those who have the least means to protect themselves. Caring for the environment and caring for people are one and the same task.
This Charter commits neither money nor great means. It commits habits held over time, in proportion to what each can really do.
Shared commitments
What we commit to doing
1. Keep our place clean
House, yard, classroom, place of worship, surroundings: we do not let waste pile up and we do not burn waste in the open.
2. Sort what can be sorted
We separate organic waste from the rest and we compost what can be composted.
3. Reduce plastic
We limit single-use packaging and we reuse containers where we can.
4. Protect water
We keep the surroundings of springs and water points clean, and we keep latrines away from water points.
5. Plant and care for
We plant trees suited to the place and we undertake to water and protect them, not only to put them in the ground.
6. Report without accusing
Faced with harm to the environment, we describe the facts precisely, without blaming anyone and without putting ourselves in danger.
7. Pass it on
We share what we learn with at least one other family, class or group.
8. Tell the truth
We count only what we have actually done. A modest, accurate result is worth more than a flattering figure.
Depending on who signs
Specific commitments
A household
Keep the plot clean, compost, save water, plant at least one tree and look after it, teach the habits to the children.
A school
Start or support an environmental club, keep the yard clean, run at least one action each term, bring the modules into school life.
A parish
Form an animating team, connect prayer, formation and concrete habits, keep places of worship and their surroundings clean.
A neighbourhood or a hill
Organise regular community works, maintain the drainage channels, protect the springs and fight erosion.
An association or an NGO
Write these commitments into its activities, train its members, account for what is done.
Another kind of body
Adapt the shared commitments to its activity and state which ones are taken as priorities.
In return
What the programme commits to doing
- Give free access to the training modules and the action sheets.
- Support the bodies that ask for it, without taking their place.
- Publish only figures that have actually been measured.
- Not use the information sent to us for any purpose other than monitoring the programme.
