Become an Imuhira Animator, a Guardian of Creation

An Imuhira Animator learns, acts and passes it on. He or she trains on e-muhira, launches practical initiatives at home, at school, in the parish or on the hill, and draws others into caring for our common home. The path is free and open to anyone registered on the platform.

The role

Learn, act, pass it on

An Imuhira Animator is not an expert from elsewhere. He or she is a member of the community who has trained, leads by example and helps others to act, with schools, parishes and local authorities — never in their place.

🎓

Learn

Follow the platform’s three courses: the environment, integral ecology, and protecting people from sexual exploitation and abuse.

🌱

Act

Launch practical initiatives with the means at hand: clean-ups, sorting plastic waste, planting and caring for trees, protecting a spring…

🤝

Pass it on

Bring a group along — a club, a class, a parish, neighbours on the hill — and help it carry on without you.

Step 1 · Train

Three courses, about 11 hours online

Each course is taken at your own pace, on a computer or a phone. It is complete once its tests are passed; a certificate in your name, with a verification code, can then be downloaded as a PDF.

Course 1

Environmental education

10 modules and 10 tests: waste, plastics, climate, water, biodiversity, reforestation, eco-citizenship, Laudato Si’, practical action.

Course 2

Integral ecology

6 modules and 6 tests to understand that “everything is connected” and learn to lead a community. Each module offers 4 sessions to run together on the ground.

Course 3

PSEA — protecting people

7 modules, 7 tests and a final test on protection from sexual exploitation and abuse. Essential for anyone leading groups that include children and vulnerable people.

About 3½ to 4 hours

In all, about 11 hours online. At one hour a week, the full path takes about three months. The group sessions of the Integral ecology course come on top of this, at your community’s pace.

How these times are estimated: careful reading at 120 to 150 words a minute, about one minute per test question and around ten minutes of discussion on each module’s forum. Your own pace may differ.

Step 2 · Act

Three initiatives you have launched

A Guardian of Creation is known by what he or she does. To become one, you launch at least three initiatives and report each of them on the platform. The ACAPE team checks them before they count.

What counts as an initiative

  • You started it: you proposed, prepared and led it.
  • It is practical and local: a visible step for the environment, at home, at school, in the parish or on the hill.
  • At least one of the three is carried out with a group: a club, a class, a parish or neighbours.
  • It follows the golden rules: permission from local authorities, consent for photos, no hazardous waste handled.

How to report it

  • Fill in one entry per initiative in “Report a completed action”: date, place, scale, number of participants, result.
  • Add evidence: a photo taken with people’s consent, or an attachment.
  • Only report what was really done. The team may contact you, or a local leader, to check.

Step 3 · Be recognised

Two badges, one for each stage reached

The badges appear on your e-muhira profile. Each one states who issued it and on what conditions, so that anyone can check what it is worth.

Imuhira Animator on mission badge: a seedling before the rising sun

Imuhira Animator on mission

Issued automatically as soon as the three courses are complete. You are then an Imuhira Animator and can launch your initiatives.

Issued by ACAPE Burundi once three of your initiatives have been checked, at least one of them carried out with a group.

Our shared commitments

What is expected of an Imuhira Animator

  • Live by the Imuhira Charter and invite those around you to sign it.
  • Protect children and vulnerable people in every activity, as taught in the PSEA course.
  • Act with schools, parishes and local authorities, never in their place.
  • Tell the truth: report only what was really done.

Where to act next

An Imuhira Animator can start or support an environmental club, an Imuhira Parish or an Imuhira School. The platform provides a step-by-step guide for each.

Environmental clubs →

Imuhira Parish →

Imuhira School →

This path draws on programmes that have proved their worth, such as the Laudato Si’ Animators programme of the Laudato Si’ Movement: training, a first practical project in one’s community, and a commitment to safeguarding rules.

Frequently asked questions

Before you start

In what order should I take the three courses?
In any order you like. We suggest starting with Environmental education, which lays the foundations, then Integral ecology, and finishing with PSEA before leading a group.
Does the Imuhira Animator status cost anything?
No. The courses, certificates and badges are free.
Can I report an initiative before finishing the courses?
Yes. Any action carried out can be reported at any time. The “Guardian of Creation” badge is issued once both conditions are met: the three courses complete and three initiatives checked.
What if an initiative is not accepted?
The team tells you what is missing. You can complete the entry or report another initiative.
My question is not listed here.
