Why e-muhira exists

Droughts, erosion, deforestation, plastic waste: harm to the environment is visible everywhere in Burundi. This is what the programme seeks to push back.

Climate change

More frequent droughts and floods. Rainfall is becoming unpredictable, making our farming calendars obsolete.

Severe erosion

Gullies are spreading and soil fertility is declining. On slopes farmed without protection, the soil that feeds us washes into the rivers with every heavy rain.

Deforestation

Wood and charcoal remain the household fuel of most families. Pressure on the forests, including the Kibira, is not easing, and the water towers are being stripped bare.

Growing plastic waste pollution

Plastic waste is piling up in gutters, rivers and lakes. Despite the ban on non-biodegradable bags, single-use packaging is still everywhere.

Join us

e-muhira is an environmental learning platform open to all, designed to raise awareness and mobilise every Burundian citizen to protect our shared environment.

The platform is aimed first at four audiences:

  • pupils and students;
  • young people leading initiatives in their neighbourhood or on their hill;
  • local associations and cooperatives;
  • teachers, facilitators and community workers.

It is open whatever your level of education, whether you live in town or in the countryside, whether you learn alone or in a group.
